Home Roof Replacement Recommendations for Your Next Professional Hire

If your home's roof is beginning to show signs of its age, it is time to hire a professional roofer to complete the job to restore your roof to proper form. If you're getting a new roof, you have many options to upgrade your home's exterior and appearance with a more energy-efficient shingle or one that accentuates your home's exterior. Here are some recommendations for you to consider the next time you are in the market to replace your roof.

1. Hire a Reputable Roofer

When someone is going to be working on your home's roof, you should hire someone who will do a good job on the project. Hiring someone who is new to the business or does not know what they are doing can leave parts of your roof exposed, make the roof look bad, or harm your home's value.

Look for a professional roofer who can provide you some recommendations of their past jobs, either with photos or an address, so you can view their work. It is recommended to hire a roofer who has been in the business for at least five years. Bad roofers usually won't stay in business for more than five years because their poor work and reputation will prevent them from getting regular work.

2. Don't Skimp on the Removal Process

When you hire a professional roofer to replace your roof with a new roof, you want to make sure they remove the old shingles first. Many homeowners may want to try to save money on labor by not removing the old shingles or simply placing the new layer over the old one. Once a home has two to three layers of shingles, adding more can be damaging to your home, so is not recommended.

Leaving old shingles in place when you hire a new roof to be installed is not a good idea for a few reasons. The condition of your roof's decking and roofing felt can contain moisture damage or dry rot and you won't know this if the old layer is not scraped off. Secondly, adding several layers of shingles to your roof adds too much weight on your home and it can affect its structure. Also, if your existing roof's shingles have bumps and irregularities, placing a new layer of shingles over the old will only accentuate these irregularities even more.

Learn more about the roof replacement process by contacting local roof contractors.
