Renting A Roll-Off Dumpster For The First Time? Here's What You Want To Know

There are some small jobs at home in which you can easily handle the resulting trash without a major waste collection plan, but there will always be those massive tasks that require a lot more consideration where trash is concerned. As a consumer who is performing work on your residential property, it is helpful to have access to a roll-off dumpster rental service. While most people think of these large containers as designated for construction and industrial projects, they can be just as easily used at home. Here is a quick look at a few things you probably want to know if you are considering renting a roll-off dumpster for an at-home project involving a lot of waste.

Are there small roll-off dumpsters available?

Most waste management companies have a range of roll-off dumpster sizes available, from massive ones that have to be delivered by a large flatbed truck to smaller versions usually towable on a traditional waste truck. Keep in mind that it is better to go with a dumpster a bit larger than what you expect to need so over-spillage is not an issue and you don't spend extra on repeated retrieval costs to empty the receptacle. However, in some cases, a small roll-off works better because there is limited space available on your property for placement.

Do you have to have a paved driveway for placement?

It is best if you do have a paved surface for the placement of the dumpster because it essentially has to be rolled into place upon delivery by the truck. Plus, having a solid surface means that you will not have to worry about the receptacle causing damage to soft ground during rain. However, you can also create a temporary landing spot for a roll-off dumpster with a sheet of metal or a large piece of plywood.

Will you have to get a permit to have the dumpster on your property?

This will depend on where you live and city ordinances and restrictions in place by the local government. Most places will not have an issue with the dumpster being placed solely on your property. However, if you have to place the dumpster on a public sidewalk or area that would otherwise be used for parking, you may have to get permission from the city government. Additionally, some property owners associations have guidelines about placing rented dumpsters on property in the community.
