3 Tips for Staying Cool This Summer

Now that the summer is here many people are wondering what they can do to keep their houses cool without blasting their AC everyday. With a little bit of effort you can keep yourself cool without cranking up the AC. Here are some simple ideas.

1. Keep Your Body Cool

One of the most common misconceptions is that you have to cool the entire house to get comfortable. This is not the case; instead you just have to worry about keeping your body at a comfortable temperature. This is why you should eat cold foods and drinks such as ice cream, popsicles, frozen fruits, and iced beverages. You can lose a layer of clothing, sit in front of a box fan, take a cold shower, or drape a cold rag over part of your body.

By doing these you can easily keep yourself cool, even if your house is much hotter than you would like. Additionally, be sure that if there are children in the house that you are sure to check their body temperature to ensure they are not overheating. Also continue to give them plenty of cool drinks and do the same cooling things for them.

2. Take a Break from Cooking (at Least Inside)

Another way to keep the house cool is to avoid doing anything to heat it up. When you use the oven it emits heat in the house. Since the oven is usually on the main floor and heat rises, it will not only heat your kitchen, but it could spread to other parts of the house, especially the upstairs rooms.

By preparing your meals without using the oven, or cooking outside on a grill instead, you don't contribute to make the house any hotter, which means your AC doesn't have to work as hard.

3. Keep the Air Moving

There are so many easy ways to keep the air flowing throughout the house. You can install ceiling fans, put up box fans, or open windows. Many times the house feels unbearable because the air is stagnant and stuffy. By airing out the house and keeping the air flowing you might feel more comfortable even if the temperature remains constant.

These are just a couple simple techniques that you can use to keep yourself cool this summer without breaking the bank. But should your AC need repairing, talk to a professional like Davis Repair Service.
