How To Make Sure Your Roof Is In Good Condition

Your roof is a vital part of your home that needs to be cared for just as the interior of your home needs to be cared for. Here are 3 ways to make sure that your roof is secure and in good condition.

1. Underlayment

First, you need to get up on your roof and check to see if any of the underlayment is showing. If the roof is missing shingles, then the underlayment may be showing. If this material is showing, it is important to cover it up right away.

Also, you need to make sure that the underlayment is not coming up and is not peeling away from the roof. This material is what provides the main barrier between moisture and weather getting into your home. It should be securely tacked down around your entire roof.

If you cannot see the underlayment, then you may need to call a roofing contractor who can inspect it every year or two.

2. Shingles

Second, you need to check the shingles if this is your type of roofing. Shingles, whether they are asphalt, wood, or clay, need to cover the entire roof. Even if just one or two are missing, this gives moisture a chance to seep in and to work its way under the underlayment.

You can easily replace the shingles and get them to match the color of your roofing, although if you have old asphalt shingles on your house, then the new shingles may not match perfectly due to sun fading that has occurred.

3. Gutters

Lastly, gutters are an important part of your roof that you may overlook because gutters do not protect your roof. They are, however, vital and important to keeping your roof and yard free of water.

When you get up on your roof, look along all of the gutters to make sure that none are dented. If they are dented, then this may prevent water from flowing through them properly. Also, check for debris that has built up in the pipes because these objects will also prevent water from moving properly.

If any of your pipes are damaged, then call a roofing contractor who can pop out the dents or who can replace the pipes. The severity of the damage will determine what needs to happen to make the gutters work well again.

By doing these 3 things, you can make sure that your roof is in great condition so that it provides protection from the elements. To learn more, contact a company like Whitaker Construction Group Inc. with any questions you have.
